The title of the topic isn’t totally my focus, but I think it’s definitely an important part of what I’m trying to say. It’s always bothered me, but after making my first visit to Derek’s webpage, I decided to make a feminism topic of my own. Nothing against you Derek. I just had the urge to write my own little topic. I’m sure you’ll enjoy dissecting this anyways. Go ahead and reveal all the holes for me, so that I can fill them with my phallicistic verbiage (Refer to this to find out why this is probably the most clever thing I’ve ever said/written. I’m so disappointed in myself… )
Okay, so we all know about feminism, right? I’m all for feminism, but I think that nowadays there is little need for it, at least in our society. It seems to me alot of feminists have their priorities messed up. There are many countries where male dominance is clearly a problem. I think feminists should focus on helping out in these places, rather than wasting their time in developed countries, where they make no change, just simply dissecting any possible facet of society that is conveniently “unfair” to them, and fuelling their fruitless propaganda with it. Our nations have evolved in its views. Equality issues are very rare these days. Get over it. (Oh yeah, and if I generalize feminists as being bad, I’m sorry. I think everyone reading this should be intelligent enough to realize that I’m not some narrow-minded prick, and they should be able to differentiate simple text from my true meaning). I can think of plenty of plausible inequalities and stereotypes towards men, but I don’t hear a whole lot of bitching about it in my day to day travels. Why? Is it immeasurable to the suffering todays women go through? Are we expected to bear it due to the “nature of our gender”? Do we simply not care? I personally don’t, and my intent here is not to promote masculism either, despite the topic’s title.
The intent of this topic is debunking feminism, for the most part, and I’ll start with just that. The debunking of certain “myths” or exaggerations. Let’s see, where to start… the workplace is a common one. Let’s head there for starters. I shouldn’t even need to go into detail on wages. Wage discrimination is severely frowned upon today. If there is some sort of major pregidous, the woman could quite easily report it, and have it dealt with. Women also feel that they are treated less than equal in the workplace. I’m sure that’s true in a many cases. I wouldn’t deny that. But I wouldn’t deny the opposite either. In a working environment, or just about any environment for that matter, women are generally treated with much more courtesy than men. Doesn’t sound very fair to me.
This working stuff branches off into the defined roles in a family too. Traditionally, men are usually the providers, and women are the caretakers. This has slowly been changing for a long time now. More and more women are becoming independent and working jobs to provide for their families. There’s still some definite inequalities in here, and feminists see this a big problem. But seriously, what’s the big fucking problem? It’s all a matter of preference whether you want to work for the rest of your life, or stay at home, cleaning the house, and taking care of the kids. What’s so great about working a job where you may be getting a salary where you’re working weekends and plenty of overtime (not getting payed for it). Your boss/co-workers are dicks. The job is far from comfortable. There are serious conditions affecting your health/safety. I can go on and on. And then, all the shit you do to make some chump change gets blown on that new dishwasher, or that trip to Wacky World. While I may be exaggerating, it’s not a very severe one. There’s a lot worse things that people go through.
While I’m at it, it’s a lot harder to imagine a working woman having to go through as much of the bullshit I mentioned as a working man, isn’t it? Women usually tend to flock to cushier jobs, while you rarely see women with shitty jobs. Maybe that has something to do with differences in pay between men and women overall. If somebody takes a shitty job that nobody wants, or that they have to work harder to get, perhaps its not out of the question to say that they would get payed more than somebody with a nice, easy job. Now, I think most of you should be able to connect the dots here, so I won’t bother explaining it. Not only that, but in those shittier/harder jobs, it’s usually the men who achieve more and get more done, when compared to women in the same situation, but is there fair compensation for their additional work? Far too often, not. Starting to look pretty good for women.
But wait, this is far from over. Let’s look at the stay at home parent as a job. You get to be with your children more often (which for the typical parents, is a very good thing). You don’t have anybody telling you what to do. You are your own boss. You get to decide what gets done, on a schedule you make up. You can ”leave work” whenever you want. You aren’t working with assholes, and you don’t really have to answer to anybody. You might not get payed, but you don’t really have to worry about buying anything either. You probably even get money to blow on the things you want. Sounds pretty fucking sweet, if you ask me.
I think that’s enough on that topic though, till I get some fun rebuttals
. I’ll move on to sex. Everything from the media usage to stereotyping. Media is easy enough. Woman does commercial. Woman uses sexual device. Viewer is enticed. Viewers purchaces product/service. Company makes money. Company pays woman. Woman is satisfied. If somebody allows themselves to have their judgement swayed by some commercial for cologne, or what have you, they’re a fucking moron, and their opinion doesn’t matter anyways. That’s the same for all media. Unless somebody is actually saying something that is expected to make you look at the world around you in a different light, the viewer of the media in normally expected to be amused, or interested. I don’t see a whole lot of documentaries on why men should be dominant over women on TV. If the whole inequality in media needs reinforcing though, there’s plenty of television shows and commercials where women are shown as being better than men. It’s not uncommon at all. As far as stereotyping in the media goes, it’s the same thing. It’d be stupid to let the media decide the way you look at things.
Women being viewed as sexual objects is also only a half truth. Often times, they’re alot more like sexual godesses, worshipped by men, detested or possibly envied by feminists. The way I look at it, the advantage that men have over women is the capacity for strength and etc. The advantage women have is that they are more aesthetically pleasing. I’ve seen and heard evidence of this many times. So why not use what god gave you? Most people have the capacity to look really good if they take care of their body and put some effort into maintaining their appearance. There’s nothing wrong with that, and I believe that the fact that these people put work into improving the way they look is one of the main reasons society defines them as being attractive individuals. I don’t deny that there are people that won’t be viewed as beautiful no matter what they do, but taking good care of yourself truly is the most important thing that a person can do to look good, and I think that’s a great thing. I’m sort of going off course, but you can probably see what I’m getting at. Why do people bother to make themselves look nice? To garner attention and respect of those around them. Many women, and men are exhibitionists. They want to look good so that others will notice. That makes people feel good about themselves. Women in particular, use this “aesthetic advantage” over men to uhhh… take advantage of men. So I wouldn’t say that women being viewed as “objects”, as feminists like to call it, is really an inequality in favour of men, but of women.
But oooohhh, what about all the sexual harassment and rape out there? Women are definitely the clear majority victims in these scenarios. That truly is horrible, and the people who commit those acts are horrible. But in sexual harassment and the like, who would you believe to have more advantage in the court, or in the public eye. There’s a lot of double standards in favour of women, but none so blatantly fucked up as what we’ve got in our court systems. Women are treated with a lot of sympathy in sexual harassment/rape cases, as they well deserve, but reverse the genders in the same situation, and we’ve got some major issues. If you want to talk about gender inequalities, that is the most pressing thing I can think of in our society right now. Women have a definite advantage over men in court. Doesn’t even have to be rape. Divorce and child custody is fucked up too. If we change the court system, men still get fucked. Majority of the time, women have way better jail conditions. As if they weren’t good enough already.
Why is it that violence towards men is acceptable and often even hilarious, but violence towards women is viewed as being horrible horrible stuff. I’m fine with this philosophy, mostly because of the nature and size of women in comparison to men, but if that ideology were to even present equality between male and female, there’d be some huge shit storms tearing around, I can tell you that much. And then, we are expected to be the protective entity, taking higher risks, dealing with more shit, and when Willie Wifebeater pulls some domestic abuse shit, all of us are labelled as violent, dominating creatures. Keeping the woman happy is another thing. We’re expected to be the strong supportive one, and keep our problems to ourselves. We are (traditionally speaking) the buyer of presents, the granter of desires, the crying shoulder, and so much more is expected of us in our society, otherwise, we’re the bad guys. It’s sounding pretty good to be a chick right now, huh? But I’m happy being what I am, and I’m not gonna go join some pretentious band of woman haters either. Where are all those masculist groups anyways? It sounds to me like there’s plenty of reasons for them to exist, but I never hear about them.
I didn’t cover everything, as I’ve spent far too many hours on this as is, and I’m sure you’re all getting tired of my ranting. But there’s several points here on Wikipedia that show you where alot of the real inequalities lie. If you’ve got any counterpoints (as I’m sure there’ll be lots of), go hard. I’m pretty much done school, so I’m free to have some fun with this.
